Heading out of Bar Harbour early-ish (unfortunately we didn't have more time here to hike more trails, etc - we made our way for Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, 3 hours from Bar Harbour.
Breezing through Customs (and picking up a box of Corona for $20), we landed in Saint Andrews, ready for our whale tour!
Heading out with Captain Chris and the crew (and 30 other people) on a two levelled boat, we ventured into the Bay of Fundy, ready to spot a variety of ocean life, as well a number of species of bird life throughout the 3 hour cruise.
Turns out we didn't have to wait long, with the Harbour porpoises exciting the tourists very early on. Soon after the playful Harbour seals came into play, swimming in the wake and playing in the waters surrounding the vessel.
After getting a tip there was a mink whale in the nearby area, the boat made a detour, finding it with relative ease! The whale hung around for some time, yet this is not a "tourist friendly" whale, as it is difficult to take photos, due to it not spouting water (like the hump back and fin back whales!)
Continuing on the journey around the Bay, we found another whale, this time the 2nd largest whale in the world - the Fin back whale - which is massive!!!! The spray could be seen in the distance, so we hung around an area near the coast, with the whale regularly appearing - a fantastic experience!!!
The tour concluded with the passing of some seals on rocks, as well as seeing the closest relative to a puffin and also seeing the Bald Eagle - which was a highlight!
After the tour we headed off to Deer Island via ferry, to experience the 2nd largest whirlpool in the world - (largest in North America), which was rather fascinating - the Old Sow. A very picturesque island, Kate and I enjoyed touring it, except for the deer that ran out in front of the car (we missed it, but it did give us quite a fright!!!).
Heading to Saint John - where we would be staying for a few nights - we found an interesting item for entertainment - Saint John Idol. Thinking we could head down, have dinner on the patio and watch some free live entertainment, we were surprised to find 400-500 people already waiting (an hour before), taking up the patio seating, plus standing room for the local event (every Wednesday). 24 singers participated......we stayed for 6 (4 really good, 2....well....not good), but a great way to engage the community (and a good laugh for most people). The city looks great and has many great attractions, but we'll post after we've done them!
